How do you rank in AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are built from Google's own index, and their citations correlate strongly with pages that already rank well — studies keep finding around half of cited pages sitting in the top ten for the query. Unlike ChatGPT or Perplexity, you mostly can't get cited here while being invisible in classic search. The two games are linked.
Which is the strategic point: AI Overviews SEO is classic Google SEO plus extraction readiness. The page has to rank (authority, links, relevance — the old work), and then it has to be quotable: a direct answer near the top, clean heading structure matching how people phrase the query, statistics with dates, and structured data Google can parse.

Do I need to rank on page one to appear in AI Overviews?
Mostly, yes — the majority of cited pages already rank well for the query, which makes AI Overviews the most rankings-dependent of the AI surfaces. The encouraging part: pages ranking 4-10 regularly get cited above their position when their content is easier to quote than the pages above them.
How do AI Overviews affect my traffic?
When an Overview appears, clicks to the classic results drop sharply — Pew Research measured users clicking through about half as often. If you're cited inside the Overview you recover visibility and the click that remains; if you're not, you compete for a shrinking pool below it.
What content format gets cited most?
Pages that answer the query in the first screen: a direct 40-60 word answer up top, headings that mirror real question phrasing, dated statistics, and lists or tables for anything comparative. Long intros and buried answers are the most common reason ranking pages get skipped.
Does schema markup help with AI Overviews?
It helps Google parse and trust the page — FAQ, Article, and Product markup correlate with citation, and it's cheap to do right. It's a supporting factor, not a substitute for ranking and quotability.
Can blocking Google-Extended keep me out of AI Overviews?
No — Google-Extended governs Gemini model training, not AI Overviews, which use the standard Googlebot crawl. Staying out of Overviews isn't really possible while staying in Google search, so the practical choice is to compete for the citation.
